Albumin
Let’s learn together what is albumin and what is its function?
1. Albumin in only synthesized in liver
2. Albumin = 40 to 60 % of total proteins
3. Carrier protein for :
• Bilirubin •Calcium
• Hormones ( as T3, progesterone ,..)
1. low levels leads to edema
2. Maintain osmotic pressure
3. Half life is 17 day
Clinical significance:
Useful as an indicator of hepatocellular injury
Hyper albuminemia :
– Dehydration ( in this case, Globulin are also increase
+ A/G is normal
+ Hyperpyoteinrmia)
Hypo albuminemia:
1-Decrease production :
• Starvation
• Sever malabsorption
• Chronic hepatic disease
• Neoplastic disease
2-Abnormal loss of Albumin:
• Renal disease
• Hemorrhage, protein loosing enteropathy
3- Dilution :
due to excessive administration of fluids ( In case of fluid therapy)
